3d Graffiti - 'Master

This work was inspired by a hardcore wild style design that I saw over the weekend. I wasn't interested in the overall flow of the graffiti design but rather the way the text was really stretched out and twisted to form a shape of its own. It's one thing to do a twisted design in a computer but something entirely different to do in paint, I have the utmost respect for artists that can paint a wild style design from eye.

This work is starting to inspire me to get more creative with the lettering and starting to explore what is possible with 3d graffiti instead of simply reproducing traditional styles. I am finding that the more you push your lettering the more options you have to add 'flourishes' and the more of a personality you can give the overall graffiti design. If you try to be tame and legible you don't get the same punch with your final design.

To help get the lettering the way I want I am now doing my rough sketches in half the time that I used to. I find that the more time I take the more I want to horse around and do detail instead of focusing on the overall shape.

I also tried to get a sense of movement in this piece. Since working on the promotional graffiti design I have been more and more obsessed with getting the work to have a sense of life and each work to have its own traits (speed, weight, texture). I think the more you can define the work that you’re doing in terms of concepts/ideas instead of just a word the more style you can inject into it.
