Graffiti Technica - Steampunk

Apparently steampunk style (and people that are into it) have been around for a very long time. It's only recently come to my attention with some industrial designers developing some modern machines based around this style and posting photos online. And of course the anime film "steamboy"..What I like about the steampunk style is the appreciation of elegance in functional design - the ornate nature of this style reflects the Victorian era with lots of swirly patterns and intricate design work. Not to mention the use of warm earthy materials like copper, leather and wood.

The steampunk style is meant to be an alternative to the technology that we have now - focusing on 'what if' the digital and synthetic ages didn't happen and the world was powered by steam.

With this work I really focused on getting the feeling of the era right rather than trying to get to tricky with the text. I spent a lot of time getting the textures right and researching what steampunk design actually was (as it was new to me). I had the idea all along of trying to make a graffiti design that was modern and clean so instead of using rusted metals and beat up old materials I went for clean copper and polished wood as if the work was a fresh shiny new machine ready to steam into action. I will definately do more graffiti designs with this style maybe with a more gothic typeface.

You can download a PSD in layers of this if you want to use if for your own whateverness. Don't mind what you do with it - just link back to Graffiti Technica. I'd love to hear from some die hard fans of steampunk to get advice for the next work.
