Graffiti - Retro gamming - Atari 2600

.\\ This is a work that I have wanted to do for a long time now - retro gamming!!!!!. The atari system meant so much to a generation of kids growing up and I think it was the first console I ever touched. I can't imagine what it would have been like when it was first launched, im pretty sure it would have been a major deal to be able to bring home arcade style games and be able to play them for free instead of 20c/10c. I remember being hooked on arcade games as a kid, my entire focus was to collect coins so that I could play whatever games were around.

8 bit goodness
The whole 8-bit graphics has become a cult design style now with people still being inspired to create music with the samples and generate modern graphics with the limited pllette and colors/shapes from that era. I saw Goto80 on the Commodore 64 at Arcade 64 in Brisbane was just blown away by his use of an old technology to create modern sounds - well worth a listen. I would also recommend the book "i am 8-bit: Art Inspired by Classic Videogames of the '80s" amazon . It's artists using old school graphics as a way of generating new art - very good book if you're into game graphics.

It would be great to see a doco on the artist behind these early games - these were some serious design people working with a lot less power than the modern day and still they were able to create something captivating and able to stand the test of time.

For this work I wanted to keep the early futurist style that you see on so many of the game artwork - angular, sharp and kinda techno looking typeface with a sort of optimistic/fun outlook to gamming. A lot of the modern packaging for games is serious and hardcore, probably reflecting the way in which games have advanced.

One of my fav sites is getlofi.com a site for techniques on circuit bending (altering machines to make different sounds).. Get a lot of hardware inspiration from this place - I even have my own modified furby, toy dog and keyboard that i tweaked myself. My hat goes off to electrokraft.com for the Sonic DrumAxe NES Instrument - a drum machine controller and cart for NES- youtube. Just beautiful sounds.
